Book Ancient China: A Captivating Guide to the Ancient History of China and the Chinese Civilization Starting from the Shang Dynasty to the Fall of the Han Dynasty (Captivating History) Review :

While this book is not a scholarly treatise on the history and culture of China, it does provide a solid introduction for students or those interested in an overview of Chinese civilization. It begins with the creation myths of ancient China, Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures, and archaeological discoveries. There is a discussion of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties and their rich cultural heritage. Five centuries of decentralization followed before the warlords emerged in a constant struggle for dominance. When the Han Dynasty gained power, they consolidated the best features of previous rulers which led to a golden age for the Chinese people and the emergence of the Silk Road trade. New inventions like paper and ship rudders led to technological advances. Rulers began to rely less on religion and gradually the lords under them who formerly owned much of the land diminished in significance. There is a discussion of Chinese folk religion as well as more established religions like Confucianism and metaphysical thought. The Chinese used paper, melted iron ore, and created steel. They learned how to use the water wheel and invented the gear: the Chinese learned to pump water through pipes for irrigation.A timeline of Chinese history is added, but I believe it would have been more effective if written as a horizontal graphic. The bibliography is not a list of sources but a recommendation of other books in the Captivating History series. This book is entertaining and informative for readers age ten and older. Teachers and homeschool parents might consider it a worthwhile introduction to Chinese history and culture.
Here are some of the error or misinterpretation that I can see. Time to make some correction and updates. The yellow river and Yangtze river flows from west to east so that fertile alluvial soil were brought from the west not from the east. The claim of no archeological evidence of the early king and their dynasty may not be correct. There are numerous displays of artifacts in the early Xia dynasty and before displayed in various museums in China, Taiwan. They collaborated the early historical claim of the rule before and the Xia dynasty. Some of the stone age tool remains, writing or craving on bones, turtle shells and pottery also indicate the early development of writing. The claim of Xia dynasty as being mythical may be wrong. I have not seen any Chinese historian or historical book alluding any question about the Xia dynasty. More recent finding of artifacts supported the historical claim of the Xia dynasty. This section of discussion about confusion and contradiction may be only a western notion of questionable evidence. However, there are clearly evidence that during the Xia dynasty they do rule the entire territory and received tribute from the various tribes. Shang and Zhou are both smaller tribes that are subject to the rule of the Xia dynasty. However, the governing structure is not as rigid and direct as today’s government where there is a central government that judicially set the rule for a vast territory. The geographical separation necessitated local rule of each tribe by the tribal ruler which would be under the rule of the Xia emperor. They are the “fan shu” or similar to the feudal lord. Such political arrangement also remained during the Shang and Zhou dynasty. In chapter 2 you claimed “ if the Xia did indeed build the foundations of Chinese civilization, the Shang were the ones that actually built it into what it is today.” That may be giving the Shang dynasty more credit than it deserve. It is actually the zhou dynasty that have contributed most to what is China for the last 3000 years and a lot of its teaching is evident in today. The description of Shang instability because they move their capital 5 times was not accurate. At least from current Chinese historian and CCTV’s China history series have indicated the first 2 moves are purely preparation to invade Xia Jie dynasty. Tang Shang move the capital so that they can be closer to more fertile land to gain more and build up his army and alliance. The last 3 move were to facilitate his empire building by moving the capital closer to the battle front to be able to manage both the border, warfare and expand his empire. The Shang dynasty have managed to use Bronze to make plough which enable a more prosperous harvest. As a result, Shang can also have some dedicated soldiers and there is the beginning of commerce as the prosperity of farm harvest enable some people to begin specializing on their own trade aside from agriculture. The statement that there is no evidence of writing during the Xia dynasty may need to be updated. There are pottery artifacts from the Xia dynasty with carving that looks like Shang writing. These could be the early stage of the early language in writing.Qin also reformed to grow their military power. Claiming they did not reform and only rely on fertile land to grow is incorrect. You have recognized Shang Yang as advocate of legalism but totally neglected that his application of the rule of law push Qin to its power.Same error as other translations. The Qin king that conquered the 6 other states should be translated as Yeng Zeng not Zhao Zeng.Han Wu Di’s later year was marred by the case of Voodoo practice. It is his concubine’s ambition and pushed to frame his eldest son in voodoo practices so that she can have his son usurp the throne. The framed case forced him to defend himself or be kill. He eventually was killed. Han Wu eventually know the truth and deeply regret his own actions but then his designated successor was kill by himself. A tragedy indeed.Overall, the main events are listed but a lot of the details have minor infractions that more diligent research will be clear. Take some time to look over the CCTV's China history series. it will help clear a lot of the misconception as well as update you with more recent display of archaeological evidences. This book is better than the book on Taiwan but still have a lot of room for correction and improvements.
